Long description:
The PVM message passing system enables a programmer to configure a group of (possibly heterogenous) computers connected via a network (including the internet) into a parallel virtual machine. The PVM system was developed by  Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Tennessee, and Emory University.

Using PVM, applications can be developed which spawn parallel processes onto nodes in this virtual machine to perform specific tasks. These parallel tasks can also periodically exchange information using a set of message passing functions developed for the system.

Perl-PVM was developed by Edward Walker at the Singapore National Supercomputer Research Center
as a Perl5 port of the PVM system.
